Link Google+ with Blogger

It seems that Google are trying to integrate as many of their products with Google+ to provide an improved user experience. This is good news for those of you who use Blogger as this is the latest addition to be linked to Google’s social network. So what benefits will there be to replacing your Blogger account with Google Plus?

Primarily, your readers will be able get a better sense of who you are as the author behind the posts they read. Anyone who has you in their Google+ circles will also be able to see your posts in the Google search results with a message stating that you have searched the content:

Google Plus and Blogger

An excellent way to spot content from people in your circles.

Replacing your Blogger account with Google+ will automatically opt you into future integrations that will be introduced between the two products. There have been hints that these integrations will be social ones that were originally planned (or even tried) for Google Friend Connect so it will be interesting to see what is released and whether they benefit bloggers.

If you wish to link the two products then simply login to your Blogger account and switch to the new (draft) interface, you should see a prompt to connect Google Plus in the top right corner similar to the picture below:

Link Google Plus with BloggerThere is one negative aspect to this connection of products though which is actually the reason Google have given everyone the option to integrate the products rather than simply force the process. Bloggers who use pseudonyms may have difficulty establishing the link to Google+ due to the “real name” issues everyone is currently complaining about. There were mentions at the Web 2.0 Summit that this issue may be addressed but recent events have made this look doubtful, I recommend that those of you who use pseudonyms to hold tight in the mean time to see what happens.

It’s a shame this feature isn’t being introduced to 3rd party blogging companies too as this blog is written in WordPress 🙁

Remember that you have the option to link the products, if you don’t want them to be integrated then you don’t have to…

If Google think integrate blogger into Gplus – will integrate…
I tried Gplus – Google don’t ask my opinion about my privacy; so Google don’t ask for blogger integration (IMHO) 🙂

It’s a shame one can’t use pseudonyms. I would’ve linked it but for the lack of this feature. Can’t wait for it to be implemented

    Hi Scott,
I’m hoping your expertise on Google Plus/Blogger will be able to help me with some trouble I’m having combining the two!
I want my blog posts to show my Google+ pic next to them in Google searches, and I was told the way to do this was to set my Blogger profile name to:
    Shelley Workinger
That seems to be working, except now that entire string is my profile name. 🙁
Do you know of a way to let me have the same result with the html code part hidden so that it just shows my name?
Thanks for any advice you can offer; I’m essentially html illiterate. 🙂
    Shelley W.

      Hello Shelley,

It is actually enough just to include your full Google+ name in your posts provided that you have signed up for . For example you will see in each of my posts towards the top of the page “by Scott Dunroe”, this is all that is required as I have never had to touch any code with regards to this!

You can also automate your posts to always include “by Shelley Workinger” each time you publish a post.

      I hope that helps 🙂
